Exit Select Menu Number: IP Multicast Internet Protocol IP multicast is a bandwidth-conserving technology that reduces traffic by simultaneously delivering a single stream of information to thousands of recipients and homes. Multicast Group Multicast is based on the concept of a group. IP Multicast Addresses Multicast addresses specify an arbitrary group of IP hosts that have joined the group and want to receive traffic sent to this group.
Multicast Forwarding In multicast routing, the source is sending traffic to a group of hosts represented by a multicast group address. Turn on or turn off Multicast forwarding With multicast forwarding, a router forwards multicast traffic to networks where other multicast devices are listening.
A multicast capable node must be able to: Send and receive multicast packets. It only takes a minute to sign up. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search. Currently, the firewall at a small company is blocking multicast on their network.
Should they continue to block multicast? Are there security concerns to unblocking it? Are there benefits to unblocking it? The only multicast apps I've ever used are the Ganglia monitoring tool and ntp on occasion and that's not the default ntp configuration anyway. It's not terribly clear to me how much multicast is really used these days on small networks like you describe so I'm not sure if blocking it matters too much. At the same time, I don't see any reason to block it inside your network without a specific threat.
I vote for leaving it unblocked in your network. I would say block it at the edge of your network just to be safe, although by default multicast isn't routed anyway unless you go through extra hoops. Blocking Multicast at the border has some good things going for it. Blocking it internally I personally don't agree with. This is an opinion. Also, it might be a good idea to look around SF for past Multicast questions, and notice a pattern of issues that that might potentially affect your network.
With WMF, the data transfer is more reliable as the frames are sent as unicast and robust transmission is possible as dynamic per station rate control can be done based on the link errors and noise conditions.
The multicast streaming server can be attached to any of the LAN ports. A proxy might not be a new word for many of the readers here but only a few of them are aware of what IGMP proxy is and even fewer understand whether they should enable or disable IGMP proxying.
IGMP is an internet group management protocol that is utilized by routers and hosts working on the IP network. The confusion arises when internet users have to decide whether they should or should not rely on the IGMP proxy. This proxy is involved in identifying and enabling multicast routers to extract membership information. The IGMP proxy will then forward multicast packets based on this information. IGMP proxy is composed of unique upstream and downstream interfaces.
The upstream interface comes with a high-end configuration. When you have to decide whether you should enable or disable the IGMP proxy, the first question is how you have to deal with multicast traffic and what will happen when you turn off this proxy?
On the other hand, when this proxy is enabled, the multicast traffic will be directed specifically to the multicast groups. This will be done on the basis of multicast information obtained by the router.
